Sell your inspiration to a client through photography

We all know at a restaurant we eat with our eyes first. How many times have you looked at what other diners have ordered and commented on it? “That looks good” or “let’s ask the waitstaff about that”. Well, wedding design is the same; we need to sell our concept with images that excite our clients and explain our vision. Below is my concept for a wedding I am designing in July.

I can’t wait to get started! I think the colors are so pretty and they will pop against the navy patterned tablecloths, shown below!

Hope you like the vision, thankfully my clients did!

Enjoy Summer!!!

Where Shall We Go?

As I get prepared for my next trip to Europe, this time it is Portugal. I reflect on the things that make up a successful trip. I will fill you in on the details when I return! I have not been to Lisbon and beyond in over 40 years.

  1. A well-planned group, if you are with a tour, make sure the tour company puts like people together. There is nothing better than making life long friends through travel!
  2. Great art and architecture, go off the beaten path…in Europe, any church will provide beauty.
  3. Fabulous food & drink, learn about the culture through their specialties.
  4. Live like a local, dining, shopping and enjoying daily life like a local is the BEST part of traveling.
  5. Read and study your destinations before you go, you will get so much more out of your travels.
  6. Pack smartly, you will need the essentials and can buy what you forget to bring when you arrive. Some of my favorite purchases have been due to necessity.
  7. Take pictures…but be present in the moment! Enjoy being in this new and exciting environment, don’t miss out by taking selfies.

I will keep you all in the loop if you have any suggestions for Lisbon or Porto we would love to hear them.

This project makes me smile, it is a dental office.

Falmouth Dental Arts have moved into a new space and I am helping them with their design. We want to have a coastal, relaxed, professional vibe without being too coastal. So we are using greys, whites, soft blues and charcoal, and lots of textures. We are mixing textured wallpaper, woods, concrete, velvet, wool and glass.

We are putting together a plan to transform the new space into a hip office. I have to say I love the employees of this office, they are fantastic. The Dentists Brian and Adonis are so approachable, I can only imagine how amazing they are at their jobs.

Although we had a bit of a rough start having to move into the space before it had been renovated, things are really coming together now! We have painted, wallpapered, added tile and shiplap to the fireplace, and much more!

Here are some of the products & furnishings we have selected.

Wallquest grasscloth in grey has been installed and looks great!
I adore this rug it is perfect, it is interesting, durable, and beautiful.
These Four Hands Chairs are so hip and cool, the perfect vibe for these doctors.
Side tables that will stay in place are very important in commercial spaces, these cement tables will be great.
Natural elements, like this wood coffee table, add depth to the design.
Magazine racks that double as side tables, yes please.
This is the Celia Sofa, my design for Pasha Home Furnishings.
We are making one in a light blue-grey in this project.

All right that is your sneak peek when the project is done I will photograph it and show you the end results.

Thank you for stopping by, if you like this post please let me know by liking it or commenting. Have a wonderful day!

Minding the gap, from boomers to millennials in design

Mind the gap…a phrase I am familiar with having spent time studying in London. If you have ever ridden the tube you know the phrase. It came to mind to me today as I was processing a meeting I had yesterday. I was thinking about design as a way to mind the gap between baby boomers and millennials.

Yesterday, I met with potentialclients for a commercial retail design job. One of the business owners gave mea tour of their current production facility and mentioned he was 29, he explained that people his age were comfortable with the product they produced, but older people in their 50’s (my age) werenot as comfortable.

As an avid consumer myself, and a former retailer I thought, they might be missing the mark. Baby boomers remain the largest living adult generation. Maine is the oldest (age per capita) state in the nation. If I were developing a product for the masses, I would most definitely keep boomers in mind. I think not only minding the gap but bridging the gap would help both millennials and baby boomers evolve!

So, I am hoping to design a retail space that reflects both young adults and older ones like myself.  This is a wellness store, what do you like in a wellness store?

Do you like the black trimmed glass? I do but do you?

Does this textural wallpaper appeal to you?

Do you like to see natural elements brought into retail spaces, stone, and wood?

How important is lighting to you? I like this ceiling where they added light to the vaulted ceiling panels.

What are the most important factors for you when you shop? In this case, we are selling a spa/medical product. What words come to mind for you when you are thinking of wellness centers?

Please let me know. I may not be picked for this project but I would still be interested in your feedback! Please comment below~

Thank you for helping!

Celia

SERENE DINING

As many of you know, I have added meditation to my daily routine. It has brought clarity to every aspect of my life. I am a happier and more present person.

I realize that my new calmer personality has worked its way into my design aesthetic. Here is a vision board for a coastal dining room, it is a very peaceful space. I used to feel like my work was just about designing beautiful spaces, I now see that I have the honor of creating retreats for my clients. I can give them homes where they can entertain family, decompress from their lives and recharge their batteries.

I am so looking forward to 2019. I am wrapping up several amazing projects, starting new projects, and we will be offering classes and tours in late 2019…stay tuned!

I hope you are enjoying the start of 2019, I am off to meditate and start my day!

Best,

Celia

Interior Design trends for 2019

Elle Decor Kitchen: Elle Decor features this kitchen as an example of this year’s trends.
When studying this year’s design trend forecasts, I noticed that mixed textures are in this year. Here we see matte natural wood, marble, high gloss cabinets, and metal. I love it! Last year we saw mixed metals…silver mixed with gold etc., this year it is all about texture.
Domino highlights the continuation of neutral palettes mixes with black and white, and inviting comfortable furniture looks like it is here to stay!
House Beautiful featured this bathroom in its 2019 trend outlook. I love the slab-wall shower and the mixed woods here in the floor, vanity, and stool…very on trend!

This year is going to be an exciting year for CB Designs. We are launching our European tours, high lighting design, food, and fashion, We are offering visual, culinary, and floral art classes and we are working on several amazing homes and events. I feel blessed to have such a fantastic team and look forward to everything that 2019 has to offer.

Please let me know what you are planning this year! Thank you for stopping by feel free to suggest topics for this year’s blog posts.

Happy 2019

The 5 MUST HAVES, for a successful Wedding or Event

What makes a great party? Family, friends, food, flowers, and music.

I am working on, several weddings this summer, and as I sit at my desk procrastinating, I begin to break down what it is that makes a great party or wedding.

  1. Family: The gathering of the family to celebrate a birthday, wedding or even dinner can be both stressful and meaningful. We would not want to celebrate certain milestones without our families, but they do add to the stress of the day.  Some people feel stress when entertaining family, they think everything must be perfect for their families, other people simply feel stressed having family attend events. I am fortunate to have a wonderful and very large family. We just like being together, but I must admit I still like things to be perfect for them.

This is my niece’s birthday party this Christmas day in Rome. We had family, flowers from the flower stand at the end of our road, amazing locally sourced food and great music!
  • Food: Food is extremely important to me. I went to culinary school, and although I no longer work as a chef, I do cook daily. To me good food is simple, fresh, whole ingredients made with love or passion. When I was head chef at a small Inn in Cambridge MA in the mid-nineties, I was shocked to learn that not everyone loved food. Some people just eat to live, rather than live to eat. No matter what category you fit into, you must have good food at your celebration. So pick your caterer well, ask them questions about food, what inspires them? Where do they purchase their produce, do they source items locally? What was their most memorable event and why?

I love a good farm stand, this is one I love to revisit. Everything is so beautifully displayed,  you can feel the owners love of food and pride of product.
  • Friends: Whether you are the host, bride, or guest of honor, having friends attend your event will make it unforgettable. Think about your guest list, who must come, who would you like to come, and who are you inviting because you feel like you have to include them? I would drop the last group and stick to the core group, but I am not in a social tier where this exists. More and more, dogs are making the wedding scene these days. Man’s best friend, I guess it makes sense, yet let me be clear, I am against this idea.

  • Wedding Dog
    Ring bearer pillow, or bed?
  • Flowers: Please if you know anything about me, it is that flowers and candles are everything to me. Beautiful arrangements, and table-scapes tell a story.  The story can be rustic, elegant, formal or casual. Just please don’t forget the flowers. I like to do my own arrangements, but if you are not a flower person, go to your local farm, florist or Wholefoods and hire them. A lot of farms in Maine do wedding flowers.
  • Music: Now listen up…music creates the vibe of the party. I like live music, but I also like DJ’s, Ipod sets, Spotify, etc. Do yourself a favor, think your music choices through, who is attending your event? Plan to play something for everyone. I hosted a birthday party for a friend last year, and we went with a Spotify Jazz dinner set. It was perfect, it was just enough music in the background to keep the party going.
  • Alright guys thanks for stopping by and have a happy and safe New Year. May all your dreams come true in 2019. I feel very fortunate to have you all in my life.

    Best,

    Celia
